Welcome back to Learn English with Podcasts! Sarah, what is the highest place you have ever stood?欢迎回到 Learn English with Podcasts!

Sarah

Hmm, maybe the top of a tall building? Or a small mountain on a holiday. Nothing too serious.

Mike

Okay, now imagine standing almost 7,000 meters above the sea. The air is thin. It is below freezing. And a small mouse runs past your feet.

Sarah

A mouse? Up there? No way. There is almost nothing to eat, and the air has very little oxygen.

Mike

That is exactly what scientists thought. But it is true. The animal is called the Andean leaf-eared mouse, and it holds a Guinness World Record.

Sarah

So how did anyone even find it? That mountain must be very hard to reach.

Mike

It started with a short video. Some local mountaineers filmed a mouse running across the snow at about 6,205 meters. They sent the video to a biologist named Jay Storz.

Sarah

And where was he when he got it?

Mike

He was on sabbatical in Argentina. He is also a serious mountaineer, so he did not just watch the video. He decided to go and look for the mouse himself.

Sarah

Wait, a biologist who climbs mountains? That sounds like the perfect person for this.

Mike

Exactly. In 2020, his team went to a volcano called Llullaillaco. It is on the border between Chile and Argentina, and it is 6,739 meters high. That is about 22,110 feet.

Sarah

22,110 feet. I cannot even imagine that. What is it like at the top?22110

Mike

It is a hard place for any animal. Temperatures rarely rise above freezing, and the air has less than half the oxygen you get at sea level.

Sarah

Right. Even very strong climbers can only stay there for a short time. So how did they catch a mouse?

Mike

They set traps near the top and waited. And yes, they caught one on the summit. Later trips found more mice, and even active burrows.

Sarah

So these mice are not just visiting. They actually live there.

Mike

They live there. And the species has another surprising record. It lives from sea level all the way up to more than 6,700 meters. No other mammal has such a wide range.

Sarah

Okay, that is the mystery. How does a tiny mouse survive cold and thin air that would make a human feel sick?

Mike

The first part is heat. The highland mice can produce a lot of body heat by burning fat. Their muscles have more "power plants" that use oxygen.

Sarah

Power plants in the muscle. You mean mitochondria?

Mike

Yes. And in tests, the highland mice did better in cold, low-oxygen conditions than lowland mice of the same species. In simple words, their engines work better when the air is thin.

Sarah

So they are born with better engines. That makes sense.

Mike

But here is the part that surprised the scientists. The mice also have special genes for dealing with plant poisons.

Sarah

Plant poisons? Why would a mountain mouse need those?

Mike

Because life up there is not just snow and rock. The mice eat plants from the Andes, and many of those plants are full of chemicals that protect them from animals. The highland mice can break those chemicals down.

Sarah

So they are not only great climbers. They are also tough eaters.

Mike

Right. And that changes the picture. The mountain is not just a cold, empty place. It is a whole world with food, poison, and competition.

Sarah

Wait, I have another question. Why the Andes? Why not the Himalayas? They are even higher.

Mike

Good question. The answer is the weather. The record was set in a very dry desert plateau called the Puna de Atacama. For much of the year, the peaks there have little ice and snow, so small animals can reach the top.

Sarah

So on other mountains, the summit is locked under ice. Here, the door is open.

Mike

Exactly. And here is a fun detail. The Inca people also built shrines on the tops of these same peaks. No snow, so they could climb.

Sarah

So humans and mice used the same mountain roads. Just at very different times.

Mike

Yes. The Inca built temples, and the mice built burrows. Both found a way to live above the clouds.

Sarah

I love that. So what does this study teach us, beyond one cool record?

Mike

It shows that the limits of life are not fixed. When scientists look closely, they often find life in places they thought were empty.

Sarah

And the video? The one that started everything?

Mike

Storz joked that a mouse running in the snow would never go viral on TikTok. But that little video led to years of expeditions, a Science paper, and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Sarah

So much for TikTok. Sometimes the quietest video has the loudest ending.TikTok

Mike

And the mouse? It is still up there, small, fast, and completely at home. Thanks for listening, everyone. See you in the next episode!
