Welcome back to Learn English with Podcasts! Sarah, quick question. If you won the biggest prize in the world, where would you want to be when the phone rings?欢迎回到 Learn English with Podcasts!

Sarah

At home, I guess. With cake ready. Why? Did someone win something big this week?

Mike

Yes. Yesterday, the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature went to Anne Carson. She is 76, from Canada. And when the Academy called her, she was in Iceland, listening to the wind.

Sarah

Listening to the wind? Not waiting by the phone in a suit? That is wonderful. But wait, who is Anne Carson? I do not know her books.

Mike

Most people have not. She is a poet, but also a professor. She teaches ancient Greek, a language nobody speaks today. And she translates poems that are 2000 years old.

Sarah

Oh, so she is a scholar in a quiet library. How did a scholar win the Nobel Prize in Literature?

Mike

Here is the fun part. She takes those very old stories and writes about our life today. Love, loneliness, heartbreak. The prize committee praised her bold and inventive work.

Sarah

Old stories about new feelings? Can you give me one example? My brain needs a picture.

Mike

Sure. Her most famous book is Autobiography of Red, from 1998. The hero comes from a Greek myth. He is a monster with three bodies and red wings. Hercules kills him with one arrow.

Sarah

A monster as the hero? That is unusual. Most stories make the monster the bad guy.

Mike

Exactly, and Carson changes everything. In her book, the monster becomes a shy modern boy. He has small red wings. He hides them at school. His mother is cold. His brother is cruel to him.

Sarah

Oh, that poor boy. So the wings are like something different about you, something you want to hide?

Mike

You got it. Later he falls in love with Hercules. But Hercules does not love him back. Years later they meet again in another country, and it becomes a painful love triangle. The story ends near a volcano.

Sarah

A volcano? Why a volcano? That sounds dramatic.

Mike

Feelings are like a volcano. Quiet on the outside, burning hot inside. The book takes about 4 hours to read. Many readers say those 4 hours changed how they see poetry.

Sarah

4 hours? That is shorter than a flight from Beijing to Tokyo. Okay, you sold me on book one. What is book two?4小时?

Mike

Book two is The Beauty of the Husband, from 2001. It is about her own failed marriage. 29 short parts. Each part starts with one line from the poet Keats. The wife knows her husband keeps cheating, but she cannot leave him.

Sarah

Ouch. That hurts to hear. And the book asks a hard question, right? How does one person get power over another person?

Mike

Yes! That is the exact question in the book. And this book won the T. S. Eliot Prize. Carson was the first woman to win it.

Sarah

The first woman? I love that detail. So both books are really about the same thing: how love can trap us.

Mike

You said it better than I could. One book uses a myth. The other uses a marriage. Same heart.

Sarah

So why did she win this year? Was she famous for a long time?

Mike

For years. Like the Japanese writer Murakami, her name comes up every October. In 2020 the prize went to another poet, Louise Gluck, so people thought Carson had to wait. This year the wait ended.

Sarah

Better late than never. She is 76, after all. Did she say anything about winning?

Mike

The Academy secretary said Carson felt surprised and very happy. She did not have much time to talk. She only said she was in Iceland, listening to the wind.

Sarah

There it is again, the wind. You know what? A woman who listens to the wind is exactly the person who can hear a 2000-year-old poem and turn it into a love story today.

Mike

That is a beautiful way to put it. One more number for you. The prize is 12 million Swedish kronor. And she is only the 19th woman to win the literature prize in more than 120 years.

Sarah

Only 19? That number says a lot. Okay, last question. If our listeners read only one book, which one?

Mike

Start with Autobiography of Red. Read it like a story, not like homework. A boy with wings, learning to live with being different. If the volcano part makes you stop and think, the book has done its job.

Sarah

A boy with wings. I will remember that picture. Thanks, Mike. And thank you for listening, everyone. What old story would you rewrite for today? Tell us, and see you next time!
