FZ1073: A Plumber, a Dentist Save 174 Lives

A plumber? Mike, that sounds like a joke. Plumbers fix sinks, not planes. Did this really happen?水管工？Mike，这听起来像玩笑。水管工修水管，不开飞机。这真的发生过吗？
It really happened. On September 30, flydubai flight FZ1073 flew from Dubai to Tel Aviv. It was a Boeing 737 MAX with 174 people on board, almost all Israelis.真的发生了。9月30日，迪拜航空 FZ1073 从迪拜飞往特拉维夫。那是一架波音737 MAX，机上有174人，几乎都是以色列人。
Dubai to Tel Aviv is short, about 3 hours. So what went wrong in the air?迪拜到特拉维夫很近，大约3小时。那在天上出什么事了？
About 2 hours after takeoff, over Jordan, the co-pilot attacked the captain in the cockpit with a knife. Cockpit means the small room where pilots fly the plane.起飞约2小时后，在约旦上空，副驾驶在驾驶舱用刀袭击了机长。Cockpit 就是飞行员开飞机的小房间。
Inside that tiny room? Who are these two pilots?在那个小房间里？这两位飞行员是谁？
The captain is Smit Machchhar from India. He is 39, a father of 2, and joined flydubai in June 2022. Before that he flew 11 years for SpiceJet. The co-pilot is an Omani man. His name is not public yet.机长是来自印度的 Smit Machchhar。他39岁，有2个孩子，2022年6月加入迪拜航空。之前在香料航空飞了11年。副驾驶是阿曼籍男子，姓名还没有公开。
So an experienced captain. What did the co-pilot want? Was it just a fight?所以机长经验很丰富。那副驾驶想干什么？只是打架吗？
No. Israeli officials say he tried to crash the plane and kill everyone. He stabbed the captain many times and tried to damage the plane systems.不是。据以色列官员说，他想让飞机坠毁，杀死所有人。他捅了机长很多刀，还想破坏飞机系统。
That is terrifying. How did the plane react?太可怕了。那飞机当时怎么样了？
The plane sent emergency code 7700, then hijack code 7500. Then it went into a dive. It fell 17,000 feet, about 5200 meters, in less than 2 minutes. Passengers heard terrible screams.飞机先发出紧急代码7700，又发出劫机代码7500。然后开始俯冲。不到2分钟掉了17000英尺，约5200米。乘客们听到可怕的尖叫。

Many passengers thought the same. One woman said the plane was pretty much out of control. But the captain fought back. Bleeding heavily, he opened the cockpit door.很多乘客也是这么想的。一位女乘客说飞机几乎完全失控。但机长反击了。他流着很多血，打开了驾驶舱门。

One of the first was Yaniv Hayun, a plumber. He was traveling with his wife and 2 daughters. He put the attacker in a chokehold and pulled him away from the controls.最先冲进去的之一是水管工 Yaniv Hayun。他和妻子、2个女儿一起旅行。他锁住行凶者的脖子，把他从操纵杆前拽开。
Hold on, chokehold means using your arm around his neck to hold him still, right? A plumber is strong from lifting pipes all day.等等，chokehold 就是用胳膊锁住脖子让他动不了，对吧？水管工天天搬管子，力气很大。
Yes. Yaniv then did something crazy. The plane was still diving, so he grabbed the controls and pulled them back to level the plane. He had never flown a plane before.对。然后 Yaniv 做了件疯狂的事。飞机还在下坠，他抓住操纵杆往回拉，把飞机拉平。他以前从没开过飞机。
Never flown? How did he know what to do?从没开过？他怎么知道该怎么做？

Right beside him. Israeli dentist Musaev Shota was one of the 3 passengers who rushed in. After the attacker was held down, Shota turned to the captain. He was the only medical person on board.就在旁边。以色列牙医 Musaev Shota 是冲进去的3名乘客之一。行凶者被按住后，Shota 转向机长。他是机上唯一的医护人员。
What did the captain look like?机长当时什么样？
Terrible. Head and hands bleeding heavily. His hand was almost cut in two. He was lying in a pool of blood. Shota pressed the wounds and stopped the bleeding.很惨。头部和手部大出血。他的手几乎被切成两截。他躺在血泊里。Shota 按住伤口止血。
Stop the bleeding is such an important phrase. It means to make the blood stop coming out. Was the captain still awake?Stop the bleeding 是个非常重要的表达，就是让血止住。机长还清醒吗？
Yes, the whole time. He kept talking and praying. He told Shota: I am 39, I have 2 kids. The attacker had shouted bad words while stabbing him. Shota said he was so afraid he could not save him.对，全程清醒。他一直在说话、祷告。他告诉 Shota：我39岁，有2个孩子。行凶者捅他时还一直骂人。Shota 说他特别怕救不回他。
39 with 2 kids, still praying and talking. That is real courage. But who landed the plane? Not the plumber, right?39岁，有2个孩子，还在祷告说话。这才是真正的勇气。但飞机是谁降落的？不是水管工吧？
Good question. Two relief pilots happened to sit in the back as passengers. Relief pilots means extra pilots who were not on duty. They came forward, took control, and landed in Tabuk in northwest Saudi Arabia.问得好。恰好有2名代班飞行员以乘客身份坐在后面。Relief pilots 就是当时不当班的额外飞行员。他们上前接管，把飞机降落在沙特西北部的塔布克。
So a team effort: captain opens the door, plumber pulls the man away and levels the plane, dentist stops the bleeding, 2 relief pilots land. What happened after landing?所以是团队合作：机长开门，水管工拽开坏人并拉平飞机，牙医止血，2名代班飞行员降落。落地后呢？
Both pilots went to hospital in Tabuk. The captain was stable and later moved to the UAE. The co-pilot was arrested and questioned by Saudi police. No passengers were hurt.两位飞行员都去了塔布克的医院。机长情况稳定，后来转到阿联酋。副驾驶被逮捕，接受沙特警方审讯。没有乘客受伤。
And the 174 passengers? They must be traumatized.那174名乘客呢？肯定吓坏了。
They waited more than 10 hours. A replacement flight took them to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv that night. Netanyahu hugged Yaniv, who still wore a blood-stained T-shirt.他们等了10多个小时。当晚一架替代航班把他们送到特拉维夫附近的本-古里安机场。内塔尼亚胡拥抱了 Yaniv，他还穿着带血的T恤。
