Free Food Blind Boxes: Hangzhou's 15 Smart Fridges

A free dinner in a box? Okay, now I am listening. But blind boxes usually cost money. What is the catch?盒子里是免费晚饭？好吧，我来兴趣了。但盲盒一般都要花钱。有什么坑吗？
That is the fun part — there is no catch. Hangzhou just put 15 smart fridges on the street, filled them with food, and let people take a box for free.好玩就好玩在——没有坑。杭州刚在街上放了15个智能柜，塞满食物，让人免费领盲盒。
Wait, free food from a fridge on the sidewalk? Tell me everything. Who runs this?等等，人行道上的智能柜里有免费食物？快给我讲讲。这是谁在运营？
It is a project called Shan Xiao Er, started by the district civil affairs office and the local charity federation. They partnered with Alipay to build a digital food bank.项目叫"善小二"，由区民政局和区慈善总会发起，还和支付宝合作搭了个数字化"食物银行"。
A digital food bank. So the food does not come from donations of cans — it comes from shops that have too much?数字化"食物银行"。所以食物不是罐头捐赠，而是来自货太多的商家？
Exactly. Restaurants and stores often have good food left at the end of the day. Instead of throwing it out, they hand it over, and the cabinets pass it on.没错。餐厅和商店一天结束时常常剩下很多好好的食物。与其扔掉，不如交出来，由智能柜转送出去。
So less waste and more meals. How does someone actually get a box?所以既减少浪费，又多出一顿饭。那具体怎么领盲盒呢？
Priority goes to a white list: low-income residents, elderly people living alone, and children in difficult families. Every morning at 9, they can book one box in the Alipay mini program.优先给"白名单"用户：低保对象、独居老人、困境儿童。每天早上9点，他们可以在支付宝小程序里预约一份。
One box a day per person. What about people who cannot go to the fridge themselves? My grandmother would never make it across the neighborhood.每人每天一份。那没法自己去柜子跟前的人呢？我奶奶根本走不到小区另一头。
Good news — there is a face-scan helper option. After giving permission, a family member or social worker can pick up the box for them.好消息——有个"扫脸代办"功能。授权之后，家属或社工可以代为领取。
That is thoughtful. And if nobody claims a box by evening?想得真周到。那到了晚上还没人领呢？
After 8 pm, leftover boxes open up to everyone — delivery riders, ride-hailing drivers, or just people walking by. Pickup runs until 9.晚上8点以后，剩下的盲盒向所有人开放——外卖骑手、网约车司机，或者路过的普通人。领取截止到9点。
I like that. First feed the people who need it most, then let the rest of us share. But what is actually inside? Please tell me it is not mystery meat.我喜欢这个设计。先照顾最需要的人，再让其他人分享。但里面到底是什么？别告诉我是来路不明的肉。
No mystery meat. They stick to four safe types: staple food, fruit, vegetables, and packaged food. Sometimes salt, milk, or water too.不是来路不明的肉。他们只放4类安全食物：主食、水果、蔬菜、预包装食品。有时还有盐、牛奶、矿泉水。
What about eggs? Those feel like they would go bad fast.鸡蛋呢？鸡蛋感觉很容易坏。
That is exactly why eggs are not allowed. Perishable items stay out. The fridge also has two sides: one cold for fresh food, one room temperature for the rest.所以鸡蛋才不让放。容易变质的食物一律不上柜。柜子还分两区：一边冷藏放生鲜，一边常温放别的。
Okay, but free food sitting in a public cabinet — how do they keep it safe? That is the part I would worry about.好吧，但免费食物放在公共柜子里——他们怎么保证食品安全？这是我最担心的部分。
Three gates, they call them. First, the original package is never opened. Staff only slip a district-branded bag over it, so the expiry date stays visible.他们设了三道"门槛"。第一，原包装不破坏。工作人员只在外面套一个区里统一的包装袋，保质期一目了然。

Regular testing. The market regulators sample the food before it goes in, so nothing sneaks past.定期抽检。市场监管部门会在入柜前抽样检测，不让任何问题食物混进去。

Anything not taken that day is destroyed that day. Short-life items like bread, burgers, and milk get processed the night they expire.当天没领完的，当天销毁。保质期短的，比如面包、汉堡、牛奶，到期当晚就集中处理。
So the food either becomes dinner or disappears. Nothing sits around for round two.所以食物要么变成晚饭，要么消失。不会有隔夜再卖这回事。
There is also a hotter option. The project links with local restaurants to offer set hot meals — people book, then dine in for free.还有个更热乎的选项。项目联动爱心餐饮商家，提供定量热食——预约后可以到店免费吃。
A smart fridge for packaged food, and a real kitchen for a warm meal. That covers both. What is the scale now?预包装食物有智能柜，热乎饭菜有真厨房。两边都顾上了。现在规模有多大？
15 sites across the district so far, with close to 1,000 items put out every day. More spots are planned.目前全区已投用15个站点，每天动态投放近千份餐食物资。后续还会增加点位。
You know what gets me? Restaurants throw away food because nobody ordered it. Then a cabinet opens, and strangers eat it without ordering anything.你知道最让我感慨的是什么吗？餐厅扔掉食物，是因为没人点单。可柜子一开，陌生人什么都没点，却吃上了。
The dishes never knew who they were cooked for either. Turns out the whole fridge is a blind box — even the kitchen is guessing.菜也不知道自己是为谁做的。原来整个柜子就是个盲盒——连后厨都在猜。
