How Old for a First Phone? Science Says 12
Welcome back to Learn English with Podcasts! Sarah, quick question. How old were you when you got your first phone?欢迎回到 Learn English with Podcasts!
Hmm, I was 16. A small old phone, only calls and texts. What about you?
I was even later, 18, for college. But now many kids get one at eight or nine. So here is the big question for parents today. How old should a child be for a first phone?
And how long can they use it each day? One hour? Two hours? Every parent I know worries about this.
Exactly. Homework goes late into the night. Eyesight gets worse. Kids talk less, but get angry more. Take the phone away, and some kids even buy a secret second-hand one.
That sounds scary. But wait, let us be fair first. A phone is not all bad for kids, right?
Right, not at all. It can be a good growth tool. Online classes, science news, study check-ins, many need a phone.
And friends. Class groups and hobby groups give kids a place to belong and share ideas.
Plus creativity. Short videos, drawing, writing, kids can show their work and feel proud. And some light music or fun videos can help them relax after school.
So the real question is never good or bad. It is controlled or out of control. When phone use is out of control, what happens?
A lot. Attention breaks into small pieces. Deep reading gets hard. Kids cannot focus for a long time.
Sleep too. Looking at a phone before bed keeps the brain awake. Then kids sleep less and feel tired all day.
And the body. Always looking down hurts the neck. Eyesight drops. Hands hurt. Kids move less and gain weight. Too much online talk can also make real-life loneliness worse.
Okay, so phones help, but risks are real. Now the key number. Scientists suggest not before age 12, around grade six. The later, the safer. Why 12?
Because of a big new study. In 2026, the top child health journal Pediatrics published a study of more than 10,000 American teens. They followed these kids from age 12 to 13.
More than 10,000 kids, for a full year. That is serious science. What did they find?
Kids who had their own smartphone at 12 had higher risks than kids with no phone. Depression risk was 31% higher. Obesity risk was 40% higher.
Wow, 62% for poor sleep. That is huge. Did the age matter? Like 9 versus 11?
Yes, the earlier, the riskier. For kids who already had phones, every one year earlier meant about 9% more obesity risk and about 8% more poor sleep risk.
So waiting even one more year really helps. What about the first year with a phone? Is that special?
Very special, and parents should watch it closely. Teens who just got a phone between 12 and 13 had 57% higher risk of serious mental health problems, like anxiety and depression. Their poor sleep risk was 50% higher than kids who still had no phone.
The first year is the habit year. That makes sense. Now, many parents only watch screen time. One hour is okay, two hours is bad. Is that right?
That is the big myth. Time is not the only sign. Some kids play quite long but feel fine. Some play short but already have problems.
So what should parents really watch? Give us the warning signs.
First, cannot stop. They want to play less, but always play longer than planned. They try to cut down many times, but fail.
That phrase cut down means to reduce. I tried to cut down on coffee, and failed too. What is number two?
Need more and more. 20 minutes was enough before. Now they need 1 hour or even longer to feel happy.
And feelings without the phone?
Restless and angry. Uneasy, nervous, empty inside. Grades drop, homework drags, mind wanders in class. They give up hobbies and real friends. They even sleep less to keep scrolling.
Oh wait, that reminds me of many families. The first answer to stress is the phone. Bored, sad, nervous, pick up the phone, not face the feeling.
Exactly. And two more hidden signs. They hide real screen time from parents and teachers. Small phone fights become big family fights again and again.
And online versus real life? Some kids look perfect online, but quiet and sad offline.
Yes. If several of these signs last more than 3 months, parents should take it seriously. It is not about one bad day.
Okay, clear. Now give parents 3 practical tips. What is number one?
One, try to wait until after 12. Primary school kids should avoid their own smartphone if possible. Junior high or even later is safer for sleep, mood, and weight.
Two?
Two, before you give the phone, ask three family questions. Can my child handle stress, or only hide in the phone? Does my child know online risks and privacy? Do we have clear phone rules that the whole family follows?
Rules the whole family follows. That means parents too, right? And number three?
Three, watch the first year closely. Do not just give the phone and walk away. Check sleep, mood, and use time. Change the rules when needed. The first year builds the habit.
I love that. Give late, prepare well, stay close in year one. So Mike, if a parent asked you for one sentence, what would you say?
I would say, do not ask how long they play. Ask what the phone replaces. Sleep, homework, friends, or outdoor play? That answer tells you everything.
Hmm, my phone also replaces my sleep sometimes. Maybe I need family rules too.
